I can’t believe Autumn/Winter season is here! We have very little warmer days left and the short cold days will be arriving so soon!! Personally, I’m not a fan of this season I guess cause deep down I’m still a girl from the Caribbean 🙂 I love warm weather, but although I don’t love the cold I do look forward to the Autumn/Winter wardrobe fashion. It’s so much fun to do layering and take out pieces like scarves, boots and lovely jackets and coats. Even though there is still a little bit of some warm weather left, we need to start taking out our warm Autumn/Winter clothes from storage and getting organised. As mums, I know we came be time poor, super busy taking care of the kids, house chores, our hubbys, you name it! but the cold days will arrive sooner than you think and there is nothing worse than not knowing where your coat is and you end up leaving the house and be freezing all day long!
To get you easily organised and set you up for this new season, here are 5 Steps to Get Your Wardrobe Ready for Autumn/Winter:
STEP 1 / Make Time when you don’t have time:
To find time for ourselves is very tricky but as soon as you get this out of the way the better. Look at your calendar and check when you can squeeze in a couple of hours of your time to go through your wardrobe to take out your summer outfits and start including your Autumn/Winter clothes.
STEP 2 / Review what you will need for this season:
When you start taking things out of storage you will start noticing some things that you probably will no longer wear again either because it’s too old, too big, too small, may need some repair or simply you are ready to donate it. So make sure to be true to yourself, 99% of the time you are likely not to wear that piece of clothing ever again, so why keep it? Also, if you have many pieces of the same thing (e.g. 5 white tops that are the same) do you really need that many?
Once you have gone through that decluttering process, review how many bottoms, tops, jackets, coats, cardigans, dresses, jumpsuits, shoes, accessories (e.g. scarves) you may have and make a shopping list of any gaps.
STEP 3 / Organise your Autumn/Winter Wardrobe:
I like to organise my closet by category followed by colour. My main clothes are on hangers and any casual wear is folded on shelves. That’s the way it suits me but of course, you should do it the way that makes sense to you and suits your wardrobe. I like to classify my tops by short sleeve or long sleeve, knits, jackets, blazers, cardigans and then long coats. Think about any dresses and jumpsuits you can still wear by just adding some underlayer to them and also tights or leggings. I then also classify my bottoms by jeans, pants, trousers and skirts. Lastly, take a look at your shoes such as knee-high boots, ankle boots, work shoes and casual shoes, make sure to make them visible and ready to wear.
STEP 4 / Try some Mix and Matching:
Based on what clothes you’ve got, how about trying to put some new combinations together? I know that probably this may be the hardest part of all and the one you may struggle the most, but the formula can be quite simple. I like to start by grabbing a bottom piece, let’s say a pair of jeans. Then think of 3 different ways you can wear this pair of jeans. Don’t be afraid to mix colours and patterns.
- Outfit 1: Combine the jeans with a long sleeve top (striped top), with a long cardigan, a scarf and a pair of loafers or sneakers.
- Outfit 2: how about with a nice white top, navy or black blazer and a pair of flat or boots. Put some statement earrings to make the outfit pop!
- Outfit 3: the third outfit can be another long sleeve top but this time with a padded vest, scarf and boots or sneakers.
STEP 5 / Shop your list:
If you are like me as a busy mum, you barely have the time to go shopping to a shopping centre. Also most times it may be a little difficult with our little ones to go into the changing rooms. If this is the case, I would suggest giving online shopping a go. That’s what has been my saviour ever since my little one was born. Plus AfterPay has also come in handy given I’m on mat leave! Here are some tips for online shopping:
- Free shipping: check out clothing sites that always offer this service, is a good way to save some extra bucks!
- Check out their return policies: In case you get the wrong size or if you don’t like it, better not to keep it and get your money back.
- Do they offer AfterPay or zipPay: In case this month you can’t pay it all at once, why not pay it in instalments and interest-free?
- Remember to stick to your list, don’t fall into temptation: I know this is hard but I trust you can do this! You made your list, so make sure to stick to it! Don’t be tempted by sales. You just did all the hard work to declutter your wardrobe, let’s not clutter it again.
